An AI coding agent is fast, but speed without direction mostly produces more code, not better code. Writing the spec first and keeping it in the repository gives both people and agents a single source of truth.
In practice
- Keep the spec in
docs/and treat it as the rulebook. - Slice work into one testable sentence at a time.
- Change the spec first when behaviour changes.
